From
General Convener,
Action Council for protection of Western Ghats, Kerala.

To
Hon.Minister,
The Ministry of Forest and Environment .
New Delhi.

Respected Minister,
A Request, not to give consent on amendment on quarrying distance by Govt.of Kerala.

We submit this representation for your urgent notice and immediate action.

You might be well aware the most sensitive geographical and moreover ecological conditions of this State of Kerala. The western Ghats ,we colloquially call it SAHYA PARVATHAM spreads to more than 590kms on the eastern border from Kasargode to Kanyakumary blessed with the entire state  a very fine climatic condition, rain fall of 3000mm annually that generates a spread out wild ,thick forests, more than 4000 bio diversified species etc.And that is why Kerala is still glorified as God's own country.
But it is pitty that this glory turned down to a kind of myth at least for the next generations.

The thick forests area slaughtered heavily to plantations and recently to quarries.Atmospheric temperature rose from the optimum of 17-27 to 32-42 degree certius. All the rivers were blocked to the usual flow causing high level of scarcity in drinking water.Totally the  climate had been changed.

You may be well aware the two consecutive heavy rain and disastrous floods and landslides and landslips in August 2018 and July 2019.Hundreds were  lost their life, thousands became landless and homeless.Even now a lot are in shelter camps.
Various expert studies and reports reveals that these are man made disasters. The western Ghats area is mostly enviornmentaly sensitive and without any control it is cruelly distructed by unwanted mining and constructions.

The Western Ghats in Kerala is now glorified with 5924 quarries (this estimate is made by the enviornment committee of Kerala legislative assembly but the original nos. may rise to more than ten thousand and odd)and out of this only 753 has got env.clearence.That means almost all are illegal and are not having valid NOCs of concerned depts. Moreover Govt.of Kerala at various occasions made adultrations on laws and acts binding with mining in favour of quarry lobbies. We strongly presume and appeal, these are the main causes of drastic climate change and the disastrous floods in Kerala.

Again we bring your kind attention on one and main case, that 3-4 days back
the Govt.of Kerala has made another order to give consent on quarrying keeping a distance of 1 KM only from the wildlife sanctuary and forest conservation areas downverting the existing order of the central ministry to keep minimum 10kms distance from the above concerned forest areas.

By this order of Kerala  Govt thousands of quarries that are forced to stop quarrying will become alive and another thousands will get new NOCs.This will again damage the Western ghats a lot. We as an enviornmental action group functioning for 6 years in Kerala,on behalf of the next generations highly a fried of that this buitiful land may perish to desert within a shortcoming future.

Here we humbly request to you to take immediate interventions and strong actions to stop the ruthless intention of Kerala Govt on this matter. We request your ministry, not to give consent to the order of amendment made by the Kerala Govt.

Yours faithfully
S.Babuji
